Memories of SJC Allahabad

Childhood memories are the most fond ones.... a couple of weeks back thru google I hit upon my first school's website.... and I took a trek to the memory lane some 20 years back in time. St. Joseph's College, founded in 1884, is an English medium college for boys. The motto of the College was(it still is) 'SEMPER SURSUM', which means "Always Aim high." It was not a co-ed school but anyways I was too young to know the difference of sexes. It had a huge sprawling campus. I was the only kid in this school from our colony(Indian Oil colony, Allahabad) and would be dropped to the school in a mini-bus. Since mine was the farthest I would be the last to be dropped. My sister studied in St. Mary's School which was adjacent to mine and at times I would drop at her school and take the shortcut walking all alone on the path paved by Huge Ashoka trees and a Big Church in the midway.

Then there were the Eagles which had their body clock tuned so well that they would reach the Playground exactly on the Lunch break. They would hover over the ground and look for the most careless kid. They would just swoop down to pick the food from open Tiffin boxes It was the most scary of all the things. I remember having to spend one whole day without food having to forgo it for one Lucky eagle. A few naughty kids would offer the lunch to the eagle by holding the bread in their hands and waving them. I knew their mother didn’t cook well :). But that wasn’t the case with me, mine was the tastiest Tiffin ... n I wouldn’t share it with anyone in the world.

Being the farthest school I was the last to be picked up while going back home after school. Of all the memories is also of having to sit there all alone waiting for my bus with the whole school having vacated. I would climb over a platform on the roadside and wait there from my bus to come by.

I visited the school after about 20 years and suddenly it seemed that the whole school has shrunk.... that’s a strange feeling (which I guess others have gone through,  who have visited their childhood place after a gap of some years)..... I stood there watching the school, leaning by the small platform, the one on which I would climb with difficulty so many years back  and wait for my school bus.
